Mikkeller Tomahawk & Chinook

both were rather richly flavored, a dark amber flavor.
the tomahawk was more bitter/hoppy
the chinook had a strange oaky flavor, much smoother than the tomahawk

Four in Hand Crafty Ale - IPA

very hoppy, light, refreshing. not flowery. i LIKE it and it was only $5.99 for a six pack @ whole foods and then it was sold out for the rest of the summer. saw it again starting in september..

Six Point Crisp 16oz can

uhm, lager-y? the can imparts a metallic flavor to all these six points, which i've come to enjoy in the bengali tiger most of all.

Six Point Bengali Tiger + Sweet Action 16oz cans

six point in a can!!!
awesome!!!!!

the bengali tiger is properly hoppy but the sweet action seems a little under-flavored
both beers have a little of that metallic can aftertaste
both beers are a perfect size.

hooray!

Southern Tier Double IPA (2XIPA)

i don't know what a double IPA is, exactly. but it was not twice as hoppy so just 2 times the ... pale?

Founders Centennial IPA

okay.

Roscoe's Hop House Craft Ale - Pale Ale

"subtle malt character balanced by complex hops for a smooth, crisp finish."

it's sweet and sour and i guess hoppy in a weird sweetly bitter/tart way. a sour malt?
gross.

$6-7/six pack @ whole foods.
NEVER AGAIN

Ravenswood Vinters Blend Zinfandel - California 2008

that stain down the front of the label was just one of many that i spent 20 minutes combating shortly after opening this wine - on pulling out the cork there was such a backsplash that the wine stained my shirt, the kitchen counter, the half open drawer where the opener had just been and 50 other implements that are typically in there with it. i made a bottle of seltzer to pour over the stain which helped not at all. then i got out the charlie's soap and that made the stains darker as it typically does at first, but i thought scrubbing would help and it did not. so i poured the seltzer on top of the soapy mess and it possibly helped. who the fuck knows at this point, it's just hanging on my bathtub faucet drip-drip-dripping and i won't know how well the shirt will recover. the dishtowel i employed to clean the mess is an even sorrier sight.

the wine is pretty good. pretty full-bodied for such a light flavor. not too dry, not too fruity.  as the label says: "bright and rich"

yeah - that sums it up nicely.

Dievole - Dievolino Rosso Di Sangiovese 2008

imported by pasternak wine imports harrison, ny. dievole.it

Brooklyn Summer Ale

it's like a combo of light & refreshing beers - a heffeweizen, maybe a lager/pilsner...tastes similar to circus boy with that herby lemony thing going on, or even a gose, because of the oddly savory accents, just not as good. the label colors are very pretty!

Gaetano D'Aquino 2009 Chianti

this is what i first thought:
dry. mature fruit? yeah, tastes a little rotten. the cork smelled a
little moldy so maybe something went wrong with this bottle. if not
well then - i'll never trust you again trader joe's employee that was
in charge of this wine's write-up! i can't remember what they said but
i expected the wine to be all bold and drinkable and some other
blah-blah-blah.

later, i came up with this:
once it's had time to breath the wine is light-bodied and tart,
finishes dry. still smells of dirt and plums and is too sour to be
totally pleasant.

the end.

Epicuro Nero D'Avola 2008 - an interlude of the wine variety

D'Aquino Italian Importing Co., Inc. Duarte, CA 91010

on la bottle:
"Made only from the Nero d'Avola grapes, this is a great wine with a beautiful rich, bright garnet colour and full bouquet redolent of berries, cherries and spices. The flavour is clear-cut, full-bodied and elegant. Perfect with grilled red meats and game. Serve at 18C"

taste:

it's really really thick tasting. i mean, lots of redolent berries and cherries. like lots. i wouldn't say this wine has a clear-cut flavo(u)r, but i would say it's full-bodied. what do you call it when it tastes so strong it almost feels warm? i can't imagine what this would taste good with - meat? a giant steak of some sort? perhaps full-bodied wines go well with acidic foods? i have no idea.

Trader Joe's Charles Shaw - Cabernet Sauvignon & Momofuku Milk Bar Crack Pie

bought at brooklyn flea - williamsburg (april 3 2011)

what:

i seem to have forgotten to take a picture of the cab-sauv i bought (and finished drinking) so all you get to see is the crack pie i bought at the flea which i ate while i finished off the 2nd bottle . the cab is great for a  low cost wine - tannins, dryness, richness, etc., but without much complexity. the crack pie is a sugar dusted pecan pie filling which is sweet and delicious, but i doubt i would get addicted.

score:

overall - TASTY

Trader Joe's Charles Saw Blend - Merlot 2009 (do i keep pointing out it's a WINE INTERLUDE?)

Castelain - Blond Biere de Garde

imported by vanderg & dewulf, cooperstown, ny
on the bottle:
"Set between the plain of Arras and the North Sea, the Nord Pas de Calais is famous for its fertile grain fields and for its rich, full-bodied Bieres de Garde. Originally brewed to quench the thirst of farmers and fieldworkers, bieres de garde marry the Northern Europeean love of beer with the unique French finesse and style. Biere Castelain proudly maintains this tradition, enabling you to enjoy one of France's best kept secrets."

i love a good story

taste:
this is a weird one - dry and crisp, hints of citrus, with a really funky aftertaste. can't really begin to describe it, maybe it's the type of yeast or grains? odd, mostly very enjoyable.

score:
dunno, it's pretty okay.

Trader Joe's Charles Saw Blend - Shiraz 2009 (guess what kind of interlude this is!)

the story i heard about "two buck chuck" was that a winery was the sole supplier to an airline that went bust and sold the last of its supply to trader joe's but it was SOOOOO popular production continued in an exclusive partnership with trader joe's.

on the bottle:
"From Bronco Wine Company"

taste:
it's got that 'mature red fruit' thing going on (cherry, plum, stinkberry, etc), it's more wet than dry, a little sour, and i even get hints of...dirt. i mean, soil. i mean, terroir?

score:
3 bucks

Sunday Field Trip Part III - Ithica Flower Power IPA & Del Ducato Chimera @ Diamond Bar

the choices!

beers:
ithica flower power IPA (on the left) was extra fucking flowery...taking a sniff almost made me sneeze. a tasty beer.

del ducato chimera (right) was pungent, sweet, rich. odd, but also tasty.

(more?) art:

Sunday Fieldtrip Part II - Hops, Hops, and something Dark @ Brouwerij Lane in Greenpoint

this is greenpoint...

this is mainly for reference....

beers (left to right):
the full sail IPA was very hoppy, bitter, floral and like the board said "lemon peel, light bodied, refreshing"

the chelsea black hole stout (center & to the back) was rich and creamy & finished smooth - but it was a little too lightly flavored

the founders dry hopped pale ale was delicious - hoppy, but not too bitter, with a nice toasted flavor. my motherfucking favorite!
